2023 March 18 – Seniors Forum, alongside ICNA Canada, organized an interactive and informative learning session at Al Falah on Memory loss and coping strategies led by presenter, Dr. A Q Rana, a world-renowned Canadian Neurologist. This presentation focused on how seniors can protect themselves from cognitive
decline as one ages. The program started with a recitation by Br. Anwarul Haq. Participants were welcomed by Mr. Asad Choudhry (President of Al Falah) and the topic was introduced by Mr. Shaukat Rizvi. This was an interactive session where more than 70 participatns attended. Simple and tasty food was served, and the event finished with a Q & A. Click here to watch the event.

2023 January 30 – March 27  – Seniors Forum, alongside Ontario Society of Senior Citizens Organizations, hosted an eight week event titled “Your New Super Abilities: Here’s to Barrier Free Living.” This weekly event focused on assisting seniors in becoming comfortable with new abilities and life changes, including but not limited to communication skills, different disability perceptions and models, community resources, home aids and access rights and POAs.

2023 February 11  – Seniors Forum hosted a free workshop on Elder Abuse in Oakville, Ontario. Presentations focused on Elder Abuse, the current situation in Canada, its different forms, signs, legislations, and how to prevent and report it. Speakers included Elizabeth Macnab (Executive Director, OSSCO), Shaukat Rizvi (Vice Chairman, OSSCO), Mohammad Ijaz Tahir (President, ICNA Canada), Dr. Iqbal Nadvi (Head of the Imams Council & Islamic Scholar), Iqra Khalid (MPP, Mississauga-Erin Mills) and Effie Triantafilopoulos (MPP, Oakville North-Burlington). 2023 February 6 – Seniors Forum, alongside Polycultural, is hosting a session on Prevention of Elder Scams and Senior Fraud Abuse, led by Shorouq Alkayyali.

2023 January 23 – Seniors Forum, alongside CMHA and ICNA Relief Canada, hosted an event on Understanding Mental Health and Mental Illness. 

2023 January 14 – Seniors Forum hosted a Seniors’ Get Together and Dinner in Oakviille, Canada.

The majority of attendees remarked that this event was very successful. It was attended by more than 200 older adults from Ajax to Cambridge. Presentations focused on the following topcis: Seniors issues; ICNA plan for seniors; Socialization in Islam; and The Connection Project were led by Halton region, Sheikh Daood Butt, Shaukat Rizvi, Khalid Qasim, Dr. Iqbal Nadvi and Heather Thompso.. A delicious dinner (as declared by many participants) was served. This event was led by a team of dedicated volunteers from Seniors Forum, Al Falah, ICNA and ICO. 2022 October 30  – Seniors Forum, alongisde ICNA Sisters Oakville Chapter, hosted a Senior Sisters’ Get Together event in Oakville, Ontario.

2022 October 5  – Seniors Forum, alongside OSSCO, hosted a free workshop on CPP Diability Benefits. 

2022 September 24 – Seniors Forum hosted  “Sham E Musiqi”, a fundraising event for flood victims in Pakistan. This event was hosted in Oakville, Ontario. There were 100+ participatns at this event. It was a packed program, which included 5 hours of singing, two prayers, evening tea with snacks and a five course dinner. There were also fifteen current and potential members of members of parliament and members of the Town of Oakville. They all were highly appreciative of the efforts and supported the fundraising event. Many people donated for Flood Relief Funds, which in turn were donated to UNICEF Canada. It was a great performance by Ms Shamim, Qaurin and Moosa Sahib (Tabla) and some others. Thanks to Naila, Rukhsana, Ishrat, Dr. Masood, Taqi, Asghar, Riffat and others in organizing this event.

2022 September 6, 13, 20  – Seniors Forum, alongisde OSSCO, hosted a free seminar on Accident Awareness. This event was led by Bob Annan, a retired Police Officer who served 38 years with the Toronto Police Service & Durham Regional Police.

2022 August 20 – Seniors Outing

Seniors Forum hosted a Seniors Outing, an excursion and picnic at Welland Canal, near St. Catherine’s, Ontario, which is part of the world’s biggest seaway called St Lawrence Seaway.  This Seaway connects the big lakes from the United States of America to the Atlantic Ocean, with a height difference of 200 meters. The Welland Canal is a ship canal connecting Lake Ontario and Lake Erie in Ontario, Canada enabling ships to ascend and descend. Participants were picked up at Erin Mills Town Center Mississauga and Glen Abbey Community Center Oakville. 

The program started with a sumptuous breakfast next to Lake Ontario at Coronation Park Oakville. Sixty-five participants then moved in a school bus, two vans and three cars to Welland Museum and Lock Four Viewing Platform in Welland. The participants viewed big commercial cargo ships sailing in the canals through two different water levels. A documentary about the history of the construction of this canal was shown, followed by a visit to the museum. Warm lunch was served at the park adjacent to the canals. The group then moved to Niagara Falls for the afternoon. During the return trip, participants were served evening coffee/tea with snacks.

Many seniors entertained bus participants with singing, with special performances by Prem, Shamim, Zohra and many others. The group returned around 10 PM to Oakville & Mississauga.

It was a multi-cultural and multi-ethnic event consisting of Canadians from Syria, Egypt, Yemen, Turkey, Morocco, India and Pakistan. These seniors came from all over the Greater Toronto Area, including downtown Toronto, Brampton, Mississauga, Oakville, Milton, Kitchener and Stoney Creek. This program was highly appreciated and enjoyed by all.

2022 January 14 – March 14 – Seniors Forum hosted a free, weekly photography classes organized in partnership with Ontario Society of Senior Citizens Organizations.

2022 January 22 – Seniors Forum hosted a learning session on the Canadian Guidelines on Active and Healthy Aging. This presentation, led by Dr. Shakeel Ahmed, Professor of Clinical Sciences at the American University School of Medicine in Aruba, discussed health topics such as prevention of chronic illness, reducing stress on family taxpayer, and cutting down hospital and family physician visits.

2021 November 9 – December 14 – Seniors Forum is hosting free, weekly photography classes organized in partnership with Ontario Society of Senior Citizens Organizations.

2021 August 5 – A long awaited outside gathering of seniors was arranged at Lakeside Park in Mississauga. It was a gathering of more than 120 participants. The Mayor of Oakville, Mr. Rob Burton, and the senior officer of Police departments attended the meeting and appreciated seniors for their contribution to the community. A message from Mayor of Mississauga, Mrs. Bonnie Crombie, was read as she and MP Iqra Khalid couldn’t attend this outing due to their prior engagements.

After dinner, a musical evening was held Mrs. Rukhsana Rizvi including various songs and ghazals. Mr. M Nazim performed on flute and other instruments. A standing tribute was also presented to the London Victims. The party lasted for 3 hours. All members were highly appreciated for the arrangements, food and music. It was unanimous opinion that the party was very entertaining and enjoyable.

2021 July 18 – Seniors Forum Canada hosted an interactive session titled “Importance of having a will in Canada” presented by Shahzad F Siddiqui, Renowned Lawyer and Expert on Islamic Wills. He presented on the importance of having an Islamic Will and the meaning of a Power of Attorney for Personal Care. The session was followed by question and answer period by a panel of lawyers. 2021 June 2 – Amina Mohamed (MScPT) presented on Progressive Muscle Relaxation. Click here for the PDF, which includes a step-by-step process on this technique.

2021 May 14 – Seniors Forum Canada hosted a virtual Eid party to celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr. The event consisted of guest speakers from the Ontario Society of Senior Citizens Organization, Polycultural Immigrant & Community Services, and Sheridan College. The event also included poetry, Ghazals, and socializing.

2021 May 8 – Faryal Zahir, MScPT(c) provided a presentation on knee osteoarthritis and exercises on how to manage this condition.

2021 May 1 – Seniors Forum Canada provided its members access to a webinar titled “Walking speed – is it a new vital sign?” developed by the Division of e-Learning Innovation at McMaster University. Click here to access the webinar.

2021 January 19 – The students and faculty of the gerontology program at Sheridan College virtually presented on Services & Resources – Aging at Home. Click here to access the presentation slides.

2020 September 16 – Seniors Forum Canada hosted an outdoor get together in the Greater Toronto Area (adhering to Covid-19 guidelines), with various activities and a live fitness session hosted by Aslam Syed.

2019 October 8 & 15 – Seniors Forum Canada hosted a biweekly Seniors Happy Hour at ICCM Milton with the goal of seniors enjoying a relaxed evening with friends, listening to a presentation by Mr. Asim Aziz and having an open discussion on giving back to the community.

2019 August 31 – Soraya Khaleeli, Senior Advocate and Senior Program Coordinator at SAVIS (Sexual Assault & Violence Intervention Services), presented on healthy relationships, social isolation, intergenerational conflict, neglect, ageism, and recognizing risk factors and other forms of elder abuse.

2019 August 9 – Mr. Shamim Haq presented on Random Acts of Kindness and different ways to be kind to others and community to upscale satisfaction, self-esteem and earn good deeds.

2019 July 16 – Minister of Seniors, the Hon. Filomena Tassi (on behalf of Hon. Minister Karina Gould) delivered the keynote presentation as part of the 3rd Annual Seniors’ Symposium.

2019 June 23 – Seniors Forum Canada hosted Eid Milan Potluck Tea Party to recognize those seniors who have been working as volunteers after retirement or serving the community for many decades. The following were recognized by the Seniors Forum Canada for their outstanding commitment to their community: Amjad, Datardina, Ghafoor, Ghazy, Malika Syed & Allay Naqvi (Amman Bhai). The volunteers who were unable to attend but were also mentioned and recognized for their prolong outstanding social work for their community included: Dr. Ghany, Bhaba, Shamim ul Haq, Vahid, Waheeda, Alia Hogben, Talat, and many others. A big thanks to Seniors Forum Canada’s operation team (Asghar, Azam Al Shokaki, Abdul Rahman, Mahmood, Ziad Chakalli, Saeed Memon, Seerat, Riffat, Raunaq, and Rukhsana) for organizing and making the event a success.

2019 March 31 – Shaykh Abdalla Idris Ali, Senior Community & Religious Advisor for ISNA Canada, and Shahzad F Siddiqui, Renowned Lawyer and Expert on Islamic Wills, presented on the importance of having an Islamic Will and the meaning of a Power of Attorney for Personal Care.

2019 March 17 – Carly McEnaney, Registered Nutritionist and Certified Personal Trainer with over a decade of experience, presented on the importance of healthy eating and selecting the right nutrients and quality of ingredients when preparing meals.

2018 December 7 – Zahid Syed, a business professional with over 17 years of experience, presented on how to protect your estate through preserving assets, minimizing tax, and maximizing wealth.

2018 October 1 – On National Seniors Day, the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) hosted a live and interactive webinar to provide seniors with important information about the CRA’s services, benefits, credits, and more. Some of the topics that were covered:

  • the various benefits and credits available to seniors
  • how seniors can continue to receive payments
  • how to protect yourself against fraud
  • more CRA services

2018 September 29 – Dr. Abdul Qayyum Rana, a world-renowned Canadian neurologist, presented on Parkinson’s disease, its early signs, misconceptions, and what to expect.

2018 September 7 – Sandi Robinson, Registered Social Worker and Community Educator as part of the Mississauga Halton Local Health Integration Network (MH LHIN), presented on the types of housing and government support available for seniors.

2018 January 4 – Canada’s source for HIV and hepatitis C information (CATIE), a non-government Canadian agency, presented on Hepatitis C and HIV/AIDS.
